Day three – waiting, waiting…

June 22, 2010

June 22, 2010 – The fall of the porch roof has taken our plans back to the drawing board, so to speak. Previously, the new addition was dependent upon attaching into the old house structure. With the porch roof not having much to attach it to the wall, and the wall not having the assumed 2×4 structure, the plans needed to be changed. This means the builder goes back to the engineer, the engineer then drafts up new plans for that area, the builder then goes back to the city for approval, then the city says yea or nae. All this means more money.

The tentative plan is that the project will be changed to make the new addition essentially stand on it’s own. What this means is that the footing and foundation on the house-side of the addition will need to be 7-8 feet deep, while the other foundation walls can just be the standard depth. We would end up with the new house-side foundation wall being poured next to the existing basement wall, essentially making for one thick wall. The plus side of this plan is it removes the uncertainty on whether our house has a footing for the foundation or not – now, it just doesn’t matter.

So we wait for the all the plans to be drafted and get approved.
